la charbonniere

😊: We stayed in la charbonniere for ten days in June. Wonderful centre for exploring the Cevenne, being just a few miles south of Florac which is a junction for roads in the area. Also excellent for hiking, from the cabin you can walk up to the major footpath along the edge of the plateau, or head gently downhill to Florac for other trails. (Market day in Florac is Thursdays, it also has local bakers, greengrocers, and an Intermarche and a Carrefour). Internet at the cabin's a bit variable, but we managed. Fabrice and his wife, the owners, are stars and very helpful - if they're baking or making jams and preserves, you may get treated! Croupillac is a working farming hamlet, but very peaceful in the evenings. There's a decking area by the cabin, and we sat out there most evenings for dinner (there's a simple kitchenette which we used). A couple of evenings we had Nightingales singing while we dined, and good views of Griffon Vultures soaring over the cliffs. And the sky at night is terrific - not much artificial light there, so the stars are brilliant. If you need the telly and 24 hour takeaway food, it's maybe not your thing, but if you enjoy the peaceful countryside, local food, and good options for exploring the rest of the Cevenne, it's ideal simple accommodation..
