Le Maine au bois

😊: Fabienne the caretaker was really friendly and helpful both before our arrival and during our stay. The house is old with lots of character and very spacious. The family who own it spend time there themselves so it is more like a well used family home than the more usual fairly clinical holiday let which we thought was really nice. The house lies in a quiet location so guests need transport to visit the nearest shops (Montguyon and Chalais are each a 10-15 minute drive past vinyards and sunflowers and both have large Intermarché supermarkets as well as local shops). We were there during the July 26 heatwave and Bordeaux wildfires. As you would expect in an old house there is no air conditioning but careful use of the traditional window shutters meant that even in those extreme temperatures it was perfectly tolerable inside. The pool was very welcome in the 40 C heat and it is regularly cleaned. I could say much more but suffice to say that we had a wonderful holiday at Le Maine au bois which was perfect for my extended family group of 7. We didn't have any young children with us but there seemed to be plenty of games available in the cupboards should they be required.. 😢: From our perspective there isn't very much to say. One or two of the old arm chairs were a bit saggy which came as a bit of a surprise the first time that I sat in them but they were still comfortable. Also, one of the toilet flushes was a bit temperamental but it seemed to fix itself before we left..
