Writer Retreat, Tranquil Stone Farmhouse, Views, Ancient Barns, Rose Garden

A homecoming, as always. For the second time we chose spring rather than September, and while the ripe fruits and grapes have their allure, the incredibly green landscape and the birdsongs more than made up for it. It was our first visit without dog (alas), which made trips to the fantastic Gouffre de Padirac and to the towns and villages in the neighborhood possible. Very enjoyable. We wish that the railing around the terrace could be lowered so that the hillcrest across the valley would remain in full view. But on the whole a wonderful place for people wanting to immerse themselves in the physical environment (including the old furniture) of a famous writer.

There's not really much more to say! This is a very special place with an incredible peace that we felt from the minute we arrived. We received a warm welcome from the owner's cousin and the house has a wonderful feeling of home. We loved the figs and plums in the garden and listening to the woodpecker in the trees surrounding the house.

We have stayed at this house periodically for more than two decades. It is replete with charm in a quiet rural hamlet surrounded by natural beauty and interesting places to visit for people of all ages. The house itself has recently benefitted from a new range and a welcome upstairs shower. It is truly an exceptional place.

Characterful old farmhouse typical of the area with the added interest of being the former home of the late poet William Merwin and much as he left it, books and all. No shortage of reading matter. The views are wonderful and we had plums and figs in the large garden not to mention donkeys. The stairs to the bedroom are very steep and there are steep drops in the garden which people with mobility issues or small children should be aware of.

We had the most wonderful week in this rare and unspoilt house and grounds. We would love to visit again, highly recommend.

It's an older house with plenty of history that makes it more than just a place to sleep and eat. I find that it's a place for energizing solitude and reflection, and I never tire of the view from the kitchen window or terrace. (This year I spent more evenings dining at the bistro table out on the lawn by the fig tree.) I've been staying here several years and with each summer I learn something new about the area, about the house, and about the pace of the place. Once again, as I had to leave, I was already figuring out how I might return. Sacred ground.
