😊: If you’re looking for a place in the absolute heart of La Rochelle, look no further—because, frankly, you won’t be able to look much further once you finally find the studio. The location is truly central, which is fantastic, and also, as it turns out, the main attraction.. 😢: Getting there is a bit of a French escape room, complete with instructions that seem to have been run through Google Translate and then back again for good measure. I recommend bringing a French dictionary, a sense of humor, and possibly a local guide. Once you’ve cracked the code and found the entrance, prepare yourself for the pièce de résistance: a spiral staircase so steep and narrow that I suggest ascending one at a time. That way, if the first person tumbles, the second can at least call for help (or just take the train home). The studio itself is in the attic, which means you get all the charm of slanted ceilings and none of the luxury of air conditioning. It was 26°C outside, but inside it was a balmy 35°C—or at least it felt that way. I blame myself for not reading the description more carefully, but I didn’t realize “attic studio” was code for “DIY sauna.” The real issue isn’t just the lack of AC, but the complete absence of any comfort for actual sleeping. If you dream of tossing and turning in a pool of your own sweat, this is the place for you. Ventilation? Mais non. The window is blocked by a thoughtfully placed plexiglass panel, presumably to protect your neighbor’s privacy (and possibly your own sanity). You get about 10 centimeters of fresh air, which is just enough to remind you what you’re missing. Cleanliness is, shall we say, “vintage.” There was enough dust in the corners to knit a small sweater, and the spider webs (with live-in spiders) had developed a charming patina. If you’re an arachnologist, you’ll be thrilled. The night’s entertainment was provided by two French ladies in the backyard, serenading us from 1 to 2 am. Their repertoire was eclectic, their timing questionable. Closing the window wasn’t an option unless we fancied suffocating, so we enjoyed the concert. They weren’t Edith Piaf, but they weren’t the worst thing about the night either..
